Abstract

The paper examines the structural and semantic distinctive features of reflexive and reciprocal constructions in cognitive linguistics. The contrastive analysis shows that English, Armenian and Russian reflexive verbs are used without respective pronouns, because reflexive verbs already contain a reflexive meaning. However, in some cases, the absence of reflexive pronouns leads to the ambiguity of the information being conveyed. When combined with the corresponding pronouns, English reflexive verbs in different contexts show different meanings, which do not always find their equivalents in Armenian and Russian. The comparative analysis also reveals functional, syntactic and semantic similarities and differences between reciprocal verbs and respective pronouns in English, Armenian and Russian languages.
