EXPRESSIVE VOCABULARY IN M.A. BULGAKOV'S "THE MASTER AND MARGARITA" ARMENIAN TRANSLATIONS

Abstract

The author of the article examines the functional and stylistic adequacy of Mikhail Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita"Armenian translations. One of the most important pragmatic aspects in translating Bulgakov's novel is the conveyance of connotations, as the characters' speech is full of irony and expression. A. Hovhannisyan's translation (1985) emphasizes lexical adequacy, while L. Dallakyan's translation (2024) is more relaxed and stresses functional and stylistic adequacy. Hovhannisyan's translation often loses expressive nuances, colloquial and dialectal vocabulary is often replaced with neutral. Therefore, the new translation has actually been expected and justified.
